The board of directors for the newly organized Union County Public Education Foundation began the year with a planning retreat focused on increasing community understanding and support for the organization.
The independent, community foundation was formally created in mid-2011 with a 13-member board and a mission to support public education in Union County by providing needed funding to offset budget and revenue shortfalls due to dwindling state and county funds and to ensure that every child in Union County has the opportunity to succeed.

Union County has now established an educational foundation that has the potential of raising millions of dollars to support public education in Union County. The need for private sector initiatives to support public education has never been more critical as students must now compete on a global scale.
“Education foundations are springing up all over the country,” said the foundation’s executive director Dick Baker. “Communities are beginning to realize that local tax dollars and state and federal funding for schools are diminishing. In order to maintain quality schools, bring in new technology, new programs and prepare our students to compete in a global society, the private sector must step up and help make these things happen. We can no longer depend solely on state budgets, federal dollars and tax revenues.”
